Pictures and puppies

Portland is famous for its wonderful rose gardens and here is a sample of the roses in full bloom

One of my new puppy owners shared these pictures with me of some of their trips around Orgeon with their new puppy, Clover. (Thanks Valerie)
And here is a view of the oregon coast
I will be off to the same coast next weekend (judging) so probably wont get to enjoy the sights.

New Arrivals

I had a dog show yesterday and so left fairly early, for 9am showing. Cookie looked like she was thinking about having puppies, so I put her in the laundry before leaving.
The show only had a very small entry - Thomas won the breed and Susan won a point. When I got home, I was surprised to find 6 new babies! Shown above. I have one red girl and one tri girl - the rest are boys. Clever Cookie said she needed no help.

We have had very strange summer weather here in the last couple of days - on Friday we had an inch of rain in the afternood, then yesterday evening was drizzly and so was today. And the temperatures have been in the mid 60's. Finally the sun has come out and the grass needs to be mowed, but its too wet - perhaps tomorrow.

And it's Father's day here in the US - so I will wish my father "Happy Father's Day" - but in Australia (where he lives) Father's day is the first Sunday in September - strange!

I do love the internet!

A very good weekend

Saturday was a good start to the weekend. It was the first time we had been to this location for a Hound show, it was great - lots of trees, shade and tenting and perfect weather, not too hot or too cold, parking was available close to the rings and there was also some great company at the show. The first daythe judge was Breeder/judge Ann Roth and Susan was WB and Thomas BOV - the group judge was Lou Geurrero and in strong competition Thomas won a group 4.

Dinner with Sheri and Heidi as well as Carrie at a lovely Italian restaurant nearby was superb. And definitely helped by the fantastic wine that Sherri provided.

Sunday proved a bit drizzly and overcast, but still very bearable and by noon it was pleasant again. This time the judge was Skip Herendeen and Herbie was BOV and Susan again WB and Herbie went on the win the group - Yeah Herbie!!

It is the season...

The local strawberries are now available and we have had our first ones - yummy. But as anyone who knows me understands, it is the raspberries that I really love, and they are not yet available (just the ones in the supermarket - which do not compare to locally grown.)
Carrie has come down to stay for the weekend and there are Hound shows on the West side of Portland this weekend.
We have a leisurely start tomorrow, about 1pm and then a dinner is planned with friends near the showsite - which is about 1 hour from home. Sunday we have an earlier start - 8:30am.

Dog shows

Thursday afternoon we had all sort of weather alerts - with golf ball sized hail and 60 mph wind expected to hit our area. I guess we were lucky as we must have been on the very edge of it and just got about 20 minutes of heavy rain and some winds and the temperature dropped about 20 degrees in 10 minutes. The lights flickered but we did not lose power - yet the next morning some 1200 people in our county were still without power. We did get a lot of small branches blown out of the trees though.
On Friday David and I went to shows up in the Seattle area. It was my turn to show dogs and David was the support team. We met up with Janet and Jo and the puppies at Carrie's on Friday afternoon. It was fun to sit and watch them run and play.

Saturday we showed early and Zoey won a point and Thomas won the breed.

Sunday Zoey was not shown. It was Susan's turn - and she won 2 points.
And this is Susan, above. Thomas won the breed again and this time was Group 3rd. A great effort for a puppy. We got home late on Sunday night and it was good to relax.

Today was a busy day, with a visit from a family to meet their new beagle followed by my final dental checkup - my student has now graduated and is a REAL dentist. (I go to a teaching hospital for my dental treatments!)

Getting Old

Our house seems to have a few geriatrics (dogs that is - mind you the humans are getting older also!) And let me tell you getting older for any of us, is not fun.
2 days ago we decided that Lilly, our 14 year old whippet (a much travelled whippet, let me add - she was born in the USA and went to Australia with us and then returned with us back to America in the late 90's) was really not eating very fast and that she probably had a couple of teeth that needed to be removed So I took her to my vet and yes, she had 2 teeth that needed to come out. Prior to the surgery they ran a series of blood tests to make sure she could survive the surgery and this determined that she had Pancreatitis.
She survived the surgery just fine and the tooth removal was OK, but she is not impressed with the new low fat (8% or less) diet that she has to be on, and so for one of the few times in her life, she would not eat her dinner. So I guess we have to work at the new diet and try to make it appetizing yet good for her. She is also a little unsteady on her legs and the picture above is the first time that she has managed to get onto the couch, since coming back from the vets.
